Massachusetts Cent
1787 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 2b-A, W-6040. Rarity-2. Arrows in Left Talon, Horned Eagle. AU-53 (PCGS).
155.6 grains. A memorable example of this popular Massachusetts cent variety, noteworthy for its unusually bold strike, broader than average planchet, and early die state. Exceptionally nice surfaces, too. Glossy deep brown and remarkably free of all but the most trivial abrasions. The strike is sharp and shows seldom seen definition in the tunic and shield. The die break off the eagle's head to the H that gives this variety its nickname is here in an early state with only minor chips out of the die in that area. Rare as such. A lovely and interesting specimen.
PCGS# 305. NGC ID: 2B26.
From the Bill Gleckler Collection. Earlier ex Robert A. Vlack (with his envelope).
