Pine Tree Shilling
1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Small Planchet. Noe-17, Salmon 3-B, W-840. Rarity-3. VF-35 (PCGS).
53.6 grains. This is a handsome piece with much to recommend it to colonial type collectors as well as specialists in Massachusetts Bay Colony silver. The surfaces are pleasingly toned in blended steel-olive and pewter gray, the in hand appearance smooth in the absence of sizeable marks or other blemishes. Struck trivially off center to 5 o'clock on the obverse, the border on that side is through the tops of the letters TS and IN, as well as the intervening ornament. The reverse is better centered, and both sides retain plenty of bold striking detail that allows ready appreciation of all major design elements. A nice mid grade example of either the Small Planchet Pine Tree shilling as a type or the individual Noe-17 die pairing.
