Description

Pine Tree Shilling

1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. Noe-11, Salmon 9-F, W-760. Rarity-4. No H in MASATVSETS. AU Details--Corrosion Removed (PCGS).

63.73 grains. Rather deeply toned in curious ruddy-brown (obverse) and steel-mauve (reverse), the surfaces are also uniformly rough in texture to help explain the PCGS qualifier. The strike is a bit off center to the lower right obverse, lower left reverse, with the letters TS IN on the former side and NEW EN on the latter side quite soft, border also through the top of the letters MA in MASATVSETS and the entire word DOM. All other major design elements are bold to sharp, including a clear tree and crisp reversed N in the word ENGLAND. The planchet is not quite round, but we note only shallow straight clips around the edge. There are no sizeable marks, and with Fine and VF examples populating much of the census for the Noe-11 Pine Tree shilling, this piece offers an uncommon amount of detail for a more modest sum.

PCGS# 45371. NGC ID: 2ARW.

Estimate: 1500
