Patriotic Civil War Tokens
Exceptional Fuld-134/184 d Patriotic Civil War Token Rarity
PCGS MS-65 Probable Finest Known
Undated (1861-1865) Bearded Man Portrait / Hunting Dogs in Field. Fuld-134/184 d. Rarity-9. Copper-Nickel. Plain Edge. MS-65 (PCGS).
20.5 mm. An exceedingly rare die pairing regardless of metallic composition, this piece is likely the finest known copper-nickel striking of Fuld-134/184. Beautiful golden-tan surfaces also reveal subtle champagne-pink undertones as the token dips into a light. Striking detail is bold to sharp throughout, and we note only a few trivial carbon flecks that do not inhibit either the technical quality or eye appeal. Only a handful of these are known, and the number available for private ownership is further reduced by the example that is impounded in the ANS Collection. The present example is an undeniable Gem, and we doubt a finer piece exists. A highlight of the Civil War token offerings in this sale, which is saying quite a lot given the other rarities that are being presented in this auction event. Outstanding!
