Counterstamps
PATENTED / 1854 / J.B. HAYDEN (in an oval) on an 1855 Braided Hair large cent. Brunk H-398, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Fine.
A large and impressive stamp with enough information to help with attribution. Joel B. Hayden was located and working in Easton, NY, north of Schenectady in the upper Hudson River valley. He has several patents including one on 2/7/1854 (#10506) for a new metallic wheel hub, the subject of the above counterstamp, and one on 1/24/1860 (#26903) for a new boot & shoe sole. We do not know what his exact vocation was besides the inventions he patented. Brunk lists only one reported example, on an 1857 small cent. Therefore this is a new example and a much better host for such a large stamp.
