Description

Counterstamps

J. FLINT / ROCHESTER counterstamped twice on an 1859-S Liberty Seated half dollar. Brunk F-263, Rulau-NY 2153. Host coin Good with reverse graffiti.

This is the stamp of Joseph Flint who was working in Rochester, NY. He was listed as a saw maker on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 federal census. The city directory for 1873 has the entry: "FLINT JOSEPH & CO., saw manufacturers, 153 State, house West avenue near city line." A large display ad also appeared on p. 638 of the directory. The Directory of American Toolmakers gives a date range from 1847 to 1888 for the firm. This is the only example reported in both Brunk and Rulau. The Rulau plate coin.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection. Earlier ex Stephen Tanenbaum.

Estimate: $ 200
