Counterstamps
J.W. GRAHAM in a serrated box punch on an 1819 Matron Head large cent. Brunk G-445, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Fine.
As with previous lots, the large size of this stamp precludes it from being one used by a silversmith and most other maker marks, except those of larger items. It is however very similar to those found on carpenter tools, either a mark of the carpenter himself or even a manufacturer of the tool itself. Currently unattributed, a little bit of research with antique tool listings should reveal its origin. This is one of the two examples reported in Brunk, both on large cents.
