Description

Counterstamps

H. GOOCH / 1869 on an 1819 Matron Head large cent. Brunk G-340, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Fine with light corrosion.

Although unattributed in the Brunk tome, this is the stamp of Henry A. Gooch, a carpenter working in Springfield, MA in the 1850s through the 1870s. The significance of the 1869 date is unknown, but if he was born in 1819 (the date of the coin) it would have been his 50th year of living. This is the only known example and the one reported in Brunk.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection. Purchased from “Babe” Binette.

Estimate: $ 150
