McKENNY. / GUNSMITH. / BIDDEFORD counterstamped on an 1854 Liberty Seated quarter. Brunk M-471, Rulau-ME 2D var. Host coin About Good.

This is the well-known mark of Henry H. McKenny, a gunsmith working in Biddeford, ME from 1855 to 1871. He was in partnership with Samuel E. Bean from 1867 to 1871. According to Rulau, Henry was the father of J. F. McKenny, who worked with his father in Biddeford and on his own in Saco and Bath, ME. Both were prolific counterstampers of coins. This is a new example than those previously reported and the first on this denomination.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection. Earlier ex Stephen Tanenbaum.
