Counterstamps

E.K. BOOTHBY on an 1818 Matron Head large cent. Brunk B-879, Rulau ME-Po-5. Host coin Very Good.

Edward K. Boothby (1819-1899) was a gunsmith working in Portland, ME from 1858 to the 1870s. According to the 1858-9 city directory he was located at 38 Green Street. He worked with Gilbert L. Bailey, a sporting goods dealer who also counterstamped coins. This date is unlisted in both Brunk and Rulau, where only two large cents dated 1828 and 1852 have been reported.
