Counterstamps
STICKLER in a box punch counterstamped on an 1825 Capped Bust dime, JR-2. Brunk S-969, Rulau-NY 800. Host coin Fine.
John Stickler was listed as a silversmith at 29 Liberty St., New York City in 1821 and at 104 Broadway in 1822. He was also in a partnership with William Gale as GALE & STICKLER in those same years. Both he and Gale were apprenticed under John & Peter Targee at the 29 Liberty St. address. While Gale is listed in subsequent directories still at 104 Broadway, it is unknown where Stickler was after 1822 or if he was even alive, as he is not listed. This is the same stamp found on his silverware. Very rare to be found on early silver coins, this is the only one found on a Bust dime and is unlisted in Brunk or Rulau.
