Description

Counterstamps

R. MOORE in a serrated box punch on an 1834 Matron Head large cent. Brunk M-848, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Fine.

Robert Moore was a silversmith and jeweler working in Philadelphia, PA from 1829 to 1840. He is first listed at 1 Elmslie's alley in the 1829 city directory, and at SE c 3rd & Chestnut streets starting in 1833. In the 1837 city directory he is listed back at the Elmslie's alley address, remaining there until 1840, the last year he appears in the directories. Brunk lists only one large cent reported, an 1846 and one 1795 half dollar, so this is a new example. An ornate, well struck counterstamp.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.

Estimate: $ 175
