Description

Counterstamps

MANCHESTER. in a box punch double struck on an 1826 Matron Head large cent. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Fine.

Most likely a silversmith stamp from Manchester, NH. Many silversmiths stamped not only their name, but their location on items they produced. In looking at silversmiths working in New Hampshire, we find that Ebenezer Ferren (1817-1902) used this exact stamp on silverware he produced. Ferren worked in Manchester from 1845 until his retirement sometime before 1870.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.

Estimate: $ 175
