Description

Counterstamps

W.M.M in a box punch counterstamped on an 1804-Mo-TH Mexican 1 real. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Fine.

Currently unattributed as to issuer, though it is most likely an early silversmith stamp. One possible attribution is William M. Morrell, who worked in New York City as early as 1804. Another could be William Moulton (although we have no record of his middle name), who worked as a silversmith in Newburyport, MA from 1795-1850, as he had many alternative marks that he used including ones with just initials. Regardless, it is a well struck example that begs for more research.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.

Estimate: $ 200
