Counterstamps
L. BAKER. in a box punch on an 1825 Matron Head large cent. Brunk B-172, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Good.
Possibly the stamp of Larkin Baker (1799-1832), who was a silversmith, jeweler and watchmaker working in Auburn, NY in 1826, according to an advertisement on December 6th, 1826 in the Free Press. As he died a few years later in 1832, it would appear to be a rare countermark. This is the only known example and is the one cited by Brunk.
From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.
