Description

URUGUAY

URUGUAY. 50 Centesimos, 1894. Buenos Aires Mint. NGC MS-65.

KM-16. A perplexing coin, which seems to be of "special" quality, but which is unrecorded in presentation or proof form. Much like the 1877 specimen 50 Centesimos in the previous lot, this piece exhibits significant die polish lines in the fields, which imparts a prooflike sheen to both sides. The strike is also superb, with the central designs showing similar pinpoint precision and even bolder rims, the likes of which are impressively sharp and square off confidently with the edges. The absence of tone allows for all to really be studied. All considered, perhaps specially prepared or possibly just a very early strike off the die, but in any event, a coin with eye appeal that is tough to match.

From the Matthew Orsini Collection.

Estimate: $500.00- $1000.00
