Description

URUGUAY

Likely the Finest Extant

URUGUAY. 50 Centesimos, 1877-A. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield.

KM-16. A museum quality presentation striking of the date, bestowed with pinpoint definition through the arms of Uruguay, over which a radiant sunface peers, as well as on the reverse, which is comprised of a classic wreath around central denomination design. Uniform on both sides, the fields exhibit strong vertical die polish lines, which help provide a charmingly reflective flash. While most would consider the surfaces tone free, a pale golden hue is certainly perceived. Far nicer than any other example seen, with the absence of virtually all handling placing it in a class of its own. A historically interesting issue for Uruguay, its date marks the return of silver coinage to the country's circulating arsenal. Prior to it, only the 1844-dated Siege of Montevideo Peso was struck in silver, with all other issues up to the 1877 date having been comprised of copper.

From the Matthew Orsini Collection.

Estimate: $3000.00- $6000.00
