Description

AUSTRIA

Possibly Unique Off-Metal Taler Striking in Gold Cited in Friedberg

AUSTRIA. Gold Medallic 10 Ducats, 1632. St. Veit Mint. Ferdinand II. NGC AU Details--Edge Filing.

Fr-131a (this coin cited); cf. Dav-3124 (for regular issue in silver); cf. KM-678 (same). Weight: 34.73 gms. Obverse: FERDINANDVS II D G ROM IM SEM AV G HV ET BO REX, laureate, draped, and armored bust right; Reverse: ARCHID AVS ET CARINTHIAE DVX BVR ETC, crowned and garnished coat-of-arms within Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Quite possibly UNIQUE, this interesting issue initially strikes one's eye as a taler until the incongruent nature of it being gold is taken into account. Utilizing the dies of a St. Veit taler yet a gold planchet at the weight of 10 ducats, this incredibly captivating piece-- even receiving its own citation in Friedberg --is bound to be at the top of the list for many advanced collectors of world gold issues. Very gently and lightly handled, the details designation emanates from some very mild edge filing--barely cause for concern on something that is virtually unable to be rivaled.
