George III 1818 gold Sovereign

George III (1760-1820), gold Sovereign, 1818, first laureate head right, date below, Latin legend commences lower left, GEORGIUS III D: G: BRITANNIAR: REX F:D:, rev. St. George and dragon right, incuse BP below broken lance at lower left for designer and engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, Old French garter motto surrounding, HONI. SOIT. QUI. MAL. Y. PENSE., buckle with incuse WWP for Master of the Mint William Wellesley Pole, edge milled, 7.96g (Bentley 6; Marsh 2; S.3785). Brushed on obverse with nicks and bagmarks, otherwise about very fine.

Calendar year mintage 2,347,230.

The obverse Latin legend translates as "George the Third by the Grace of God, King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith." The Old French legend on the reverse translates as "Shame on he who thinks ill of it," and is the motto of the chivalric Order of the Garter founded in 1348 by King Edward III.
