Description

The Empire of Thessalonica. Theodore Komnenos-Doukas, 1225/7-1230. Aspron Trachy (Billon, 34 mm, 4.45 g, 6 h), Thessalonica, circa 1226-1227. Christ nimbate seated facing on backless throne, wearing tunic and colobium, raising right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in left; in field, IC-XC; star to middle right field. Rev. ΘEOΔΩPOC ΔOYK / APX MX On the left, Theodore Komnenos-Doukas, crowned, wearing imperial robes and holding scepter in his right hand and with his left, receiving the walls of Thessalonica from the Archangel Michael, on the right, nimbate, winged and wearing an elaborate loros; above, between them, hand of God crowning Theodore. DOC 7a. SB 2165. Extremely rare. Good very fine.
