KINGS OF MACEDON. Amyntas III, 393-370/69 BC. Triobol (Silver, 13 mm, 1.79 g, 4 h), Pella. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. AMYN-TA Eagle standing to left, head turned to right, within incuse square. HGC 8.1, 830. SNG Alpha Bank 200. SNG ANS 94. SNG Copenhagen 513-514. Westermark, 33. Well struck on fine silver with a sweet portrait of young Herakles. Nearly extremely fine.
Most of the known examples of the series, weight between 1.20 and 1.30 gr, struck on debased silver and are considered diobols. The present example, with a weight of 1.79 gr, is nevertheless part of a smaller group struck in fine silver and is considered a triobol or a debased tetrobol of the Thraco-Macedonian standard. Is it the purity of the alloy that determines the denomination, or is it always the same denomination but does the fineness indicate different periods of minting?.
