Description

KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 14.47 g, 2 h), Pella, 342/337-6. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠ - ΠΟΥ Nude jockey on horse prancing to left, holding the reins with his left hand and a long palm branch in his right; below horse, horizontal thunderbolt. Gulbenkian 816. Le Rider 295. SNG ANS 395. Beautifully toned and with a particularly elegant head of Zeus of the finest late Classical style. A wonderful coin. Extremely fine.
