Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.23 g, 2 h), struck under Hieron I, circa 475-470 BC. Charioteer driving slow quadriga to right, holding reins in right hand and kentron in left; above, Nike flying to right, crowning horses. Rev. ΣV-RΑΚΟ-ΣΙO-Ν ( retrograde ) Head of Arethusa to right, wearing earring, pearl necklace, and with hair bound in pearl headband. Boehringer 353 (V175/R246). HGC 2, 1307. Randazzo 521 ( same dies ). SNG ANS 113 ( same dies ). Pleasant, with attractive old collection toning. Some flatness of strike, otherwise, good very fine.
