Description

MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Olynthos. Circa 415-410 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 14 mm, 2.48 g, 1 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. Χ-Α-Λ - ΚΙΔ-ΕΩΝ Kithara with seven strings; all within a shallow incuse square. HGC 3, 502. MAST 6.52 ( this coin ). Robinson & Clement Group B, 11 (A10/P5). SNG ANS 514 (same dies). A splendid piece, beautifully toned and with an obverse of the finest Classical style. Extremely fine.

From a European collection, ex Tradart 3, 18 November 1993, 58 and Giessener Münzhandlung 48, 2 April 1990, 179.

The quality of the die engraving for the head of Apollo on the obverse is of the very highest. In fact, it is one of the finest heads to appear on the entire series of Chalkidian League tetrobols.
