Description

★ A Highly Interesting Specimen ★

MEROVINGIANS, Loire-Atlantique. Rézé. Triens (Gold, 14 mm, 0.78 g, 6 h), Domnigisilvs(?), moneyer. RΛCIATE VIC● Diademed and richly draped bust to right. Rev. DOMNI GIYELO Cross ancrée above T-shaped cross or base; to upper right, four small pellets. Apparently unpublished in the standard refernces, but cf. e.g. Belfort 3687 for the attribution to Rézé based on the obverse legend. The reverse legend might quite likely refer to a moneyer known from neaby Nantes, although with a different design (cf. Belfort 3112 = Depeyrot III, p.6, 17). Also, cf. Collection du Musée Dobrée, G. Salaün, 30 for a similar reverse. A very rare, possibly even unique and highly interesting specimen. Small areas of weak striking, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Childeric Collection of Merovingian Coinage, acquired in 2009.

This coin was analysed by Arent Pol and shows a gold content of 14%.
