Description

SYRIA, Seleukis and Pieria. Laodicea ad Mare. 1st century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 15.17 g, 1 h), ΓI = CY 13 = 69/8 BC. Veiled and turreted head of Tyche to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΛAOΔIKEΩ[N] / THΣ IEPAΣ KA[I] / AYTONOM[OY] Zeus seated left on throne, holding Nike in his right hand and scepter in his left; in inner left field, ΓI; beneath throne, monogram; in the exergue, ΣE; all within laurel wreath. HGC 9, 1398. Mørkholm, Laodicea, 7. Extremely rare. Only one other specimen was known to Mørkholm with this date. A few minor marks and some slight roughness, otherwise, extremely fine.
