MACEDON, Pallene Peninsula. Uncertain city. Circa 510-480 BC. Hekte or Sixth Stater (Silver, 14 mm, 2.39 g), struck on the local Thraco-Macedonian standard, c. 500. Tripod surmounted by a pomegranate with leaves . Rev. Irregular incuse. HGC 6, 219 = Rosen 232 ( but as Zakynthos - following P. Gardner in NC 1885 ). Tzamalis 76 ( as uncertain Thraco-Macedonian ). Apparently unpublished with the pomegranate on the tripod. Struck from crudely cut dies but most intriguing. Some roughness, otherwise, good very fine.
From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection and from the collection of Dr. A. Ghertsos, Auctiones 18, 21 September 1989, 707 ( as Zakynthos ).
While in 1885 P. Gardner published this coin type as an issue Zakynthos, an island in the Ionian sea, Tzamalis was later able to prove from find spots that these coins had to have come from the area of Pallene in Chalkidike.
