BRUTTIUM. Lokroi Epizephyrioi. Circa 300-268 BC. AE (Bronze, 21 mm, 11.25 g, 12 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. Eagle, with closed wings, standing to left. HN III 2352. SNG ANS 538 ( same dies ). SNG Copenhagen 1872 ( same dies ). Rare. A very impressive coin with a wonderful head of Zeus and fine green patina. Struck on a crudely made flan and with some uncleaned deposits, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection and from the collection of D. Freedman, Classical Numismatic Group MBS 61, 25 September 2002, 72.
When the great Freedman collection of Greek bronzes was sold back in 2002, the results were often disappointing; primarily because the connoisseurship with which it was put together wasn't recognised. This piece, which is struck on a crudely made flan (the flans were made in tree-form moulds from which the individual pieces were cut apart with chisels - two cuts remain on the obverse edge), is actually of spectacular quality; it was estimated at $300 and sold for only $180! No one realised how good it was!!!
