Description

LUCANIA. Sybaris V. Circa 440 BC or slightly later. Trihemiobol (Silver, 6.5 mm, 0.39 g, 3 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing Attic helmet adorned with an olive wreath. Rev. [ΣΥΒΑ]? Bull's head to right. BMC 35 (with ΣΥΒΑ) or 36 (with MV). HN III 1752. Extremely rare. Clear and lightly toned. Very fine.

From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, ex Classical Numismatic Group, MBS 75, 23 May 2007, 26.

The rarity of this coin is so great that it seems to be missing from almost every major collection outside of that of the British Museum! In fact, while three Sybarite trihemiobols do come up on AC Search, only one (this) actually is! Of the two others, one is an obol struck on a light flan, and the other is a massively misidentified coin from Kyzikos!!
