Description

ATTICA. Athens. Circa 455-449 BC. Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.67 g, 3 h). Helmeted head of Athena to right, with three olive leaves over the visor and tendril on the bowl. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing to right, with head facing and triple-pointed tail feathers; to left, long curved olive leaf and fruit. HGC 4, 1664. Seltman pl. XXII, γγγ. Cf. SNG Soutzos 684. Svoronos, Trésor, pl. 9, 34-35. Starr Group V, pl. XXIV, u. A lovely, attractive coin of fine style, nicely toned. Traces of corrosion and minor marks, otherwise, good very fine.
