KINGS OF LYDIA. Alyattes II to Kroisos, circa 610-546 BC. Trite (Electrum, 13 mm, 4.74 g), Sardes. Head of a lion with open jaws to right and, on his forehead, over his eye, sun with rays; on the side of his head, within a shaped indent, A-like countermark. Rev. Two irregular incuse squares of unequal size. For the coin without the countermark: SNG Kayhan 1013. SNG von Aulock 2868-9. Weidauer 86-9. Attractive and well-struck on a broad flan, and with an intriguing countermark. Minor marks, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
While the countermark looks as if it contains an Α, it may not be one. It could be in aramaic or simply be a symbol.
