Description

SICILY. Katane. Circa 415/3-403/2 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 16.56 g, 5 h), struck from an obverse die signed by Herakleidas.. Charioteer, holding goad in his right hand and reins in both, driving fast quadriga to left, passing the turn-post on his right; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath held in her extended right hand and the horses with a wreath held in her left; below triple exergual line, Η ( but here off the flan ). Rev. KATANAIΩN Head of Apollo to left, wearing tainia with his hair short, and not flowing at the back of his head. AMB 336 ( same obverse die ). Buceti - ( but cf. 53 ). Cf. Kraay & Hirmer 40 ( same obverse die ). Mirone 57 ( these dies ). A very rare variety, the only late 5th century Apollo head with the hair cut short at the back of the neck. Boldly struck. Reverse slightly off-center, otherwise, good very fine.
