Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Period of the Second Democracy - Dionysios I, 413-399 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26.00 mm, 17.21 g, 6 h). Charioteer, holding branch in right hand, reins and kentron in left, driving a quadriga rushing to left, about to turn, the head of the second horse raised, that of and third horses turned back to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, barley ear. Rev. Σ-Υ-Ρ-Α-ΚΟΣΙΩ-Ν Head of Arethusa to right, hair bound into a knot on the back of her head, wearing triple-pandant earring and simple necklace with a large pearl pendant; in the fields to either side, four dolphins, in pairs, swimming downwards. BMC 225 ( same dies ). SNG ANS 280 ( same dies ). Tudeer 61, dies 21/39. Very fine.
