Description

SICILY. Syracuse. 413-399 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.13 g, 1 h), The obverse die in the style of Euarchidas, the reverse die signed by Phrygillos. Charioteer, holding reins in left hand and kentron in right, driving a quadriga rushing to left, about to turn, the heads of the first and third horses turned back to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, grain ear to left. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ-Ω-Ν Head of Arethusa to left, wearing ampyx inscribed ΦPY and sphendone decorated with stars, single-pendant earring and pearl necklace; in the field to left, three dolphins: two swimming downwards and one upwards; to right, behind Arethusa's neck, dolphin swimming downwards. BMFA 409 = Warren 386 ( same dies ). Jameson 832 ( same dies ). SNG ANS 276 ( same dies ). SNG Lloyd 1383 ( same dies ). Tudeer 49 (V16/R30). Very rare, the dies of lovely Classical style. Very fine.
