Description

SICILY. Selinos . Circa 455-440 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 8.28 g, 8 h). ΣEΛINOTION Herakles standing right, holding club overhead, preparing to strike the Cretan Bull, standing right, which he holds by a horn. Rev. HYΨAΣ River god Hypsas standing left, holding branch and phiale from which he sacrifices over serpent-entwined altar to left; to right, selinon leaf above heron walking right. SNG ANS 704 ( same dies ). Obverse struck from a worn die , otherwise, very fine.
From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired in Taormina in 1931.
