Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 17.07 g, 4 h), c. 450. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in the exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙ-Ο-Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound with a taenia, wearing a single pendant earring and necklace; around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. Boehringer 510 (V268/R363). SNG ANS 162 ( same obverse die ). Nicely toned. Very fine.

From the stock of an old Swiss dealer assembled mainly in the 1960s-1970s.
