Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 17.20 g, 10 h), circa 475-470. Charioteer, holding kentron in right hand and reins in left, driving quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVR-A-KO-ΣΙ-ΟΝ Head of Arethousa το right, wearing tainia; four dolphins around. Boehringer Series XIIb, 314 (V152/R220). HGC 2, 1307. Jameson 746 ( same dies ). Randazzo 482 ( same dies ). Toned and attractive. Die-break on Arethusa's cheek and slightly flat struck on the reverse edge, otherwise, good very fine.
