Description

SICILY. Messana (as Zankle). Circa 520-500 BC. Drachm (Silver, 19 mm, 5.48 g). DANK Dolphin to left within the sickle-shaped open harbor of Messina, the shoreline shown with several square warehouse buildings. Rev. Design of raised and sunk squares and triangles; in the center, cockle shell. Gielow 23. SNG ANS 297 var. Ward, Greek Coins and Their Parent Cities, 205 ( this coin ). Very rare. Beautifully toned and clear. Old scratches, marks and some deposits, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the John Everett Duke Collection, acquired from E. J. Waddell on 10 February 1984, ex Spink/Galerie des Monnaies 10 October 1977, 92, and from the collections of Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sotheby's Zürich 4 April 1973, 159 and John Ward, and from the Messina find of 1895 (IGCH 2062 and Evans 3 - this coin).
