Description

SICILY. Leontini. Circa 430-425 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 17.28 g, 9 h), with a reverse die signed by the Leaf Master - il maestro della foglia. Laureate head of Apollo to left. Rev. ΛΕΟΝ-ΤΙ-ΝΟΝ Head of a lion with open jaws to left; around, three barley grains and, behind the head, a laurel leaf. Basel 353. Boehringer, Münzgeschichte 55. Rizzo pl. XXIV, 4. SNG ANS 257. An attractive and well-struck example. Some minor die breaks, traces of die rust and some marks, otherwise, extremely fine.
