Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 465-455 BC. Nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 8.16 g, 12 h). ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude and with his arms outstretched to left, riding a dolphin swimming to left; below, scallop-shell. Rev. Hippocamp swimming to left; below, in front of hippocamp's tail, fish swimming to left (either worn or, possibly, incompletely erased from the die). Fischer-Bossert 107 (V55/R71). HN III 827. SNG ANS 840 (same reverse die). SNG ANS 841 (same obverse die). Vlasto 135-6 (same obverse die). Very rare, the second known example from this die pair - the other is in Leiden. Lightly toned and clear. With traces of overstriking on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Aletheia Collection, ex Numismatica Ars Classica 59, 4 April 2011, 485, and from a British collection acquired well prior to 2010.
