Description

Trajan Decius, 249-251. Double Sestertius (Orichalcum, 36mm, 46.76 g 112), Rome. IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Trajan Decius to right. Rev. FELICITAS SAECVLI / S - C Felicitas standing facing, her head turned to left, holding long caduceus in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. Cohen 40. RIC 115c. Beautifully centered on a broad flan and with a remarkable portrait, matte brown surfaces and some green and red deposits. Nearly extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought by Dr. W. M. Stoecklin from Robert Hecht in 1961.

This coin has a monumental elegance that is, in many ways, quite astonishing: it could easily be a bas-relief. The portrait is one of outstanding nobility and ‘dignitas’, and shows the emperor in a way that is very reminiscent to the kinds of heads familiar from Republican sculpture (or the heads of Galba)
