Description

Philip II, 247-249. Dupondius (Orichalcum, 25mm, 11.54 g 12), Rome, 249. IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip II to right. Rev. SAECLARES AVGG / S C Cippus inscribed COS / II. Cohen 80. RIC 265c. A lovely, sharply struck coin with a fine brown patina. Very small old scratch on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a German collection.

This coin is quite extraordinary in quality: the divisions of the sestertius from this period were not struck in very large numbers and what were struck tend to be preserved in less than ideal condition. As such, this piece can be considered to be both a rare and an unusual piece!
