Postumus, Romano-Gallic Emperor, 260-269. Antoninianus (Billon, 21 mm, 3.68 g, 2 h), Cologne, 266. IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Postumus to right. Rev. DIANAE REDVCI Diana, in hunting dress, walking to right, leading a stag with her right hand, and holding a bow in her left. AGK (corr.) 13. Cunetio 2429. Elmer 398. RIC 300. Rare. Toned and clear. Very minor flan crack, otherwise, extremely fine.
Acquired from an erudite English dealer for £950.This type of Diana Redux only appears on the silver coinage of Postumus. Eckhel laconically remarked that “novelty recommends it, but its origin is unknown.” Out of the more than 33,000 antoniniani of Postumus in the Douvres, Etaples, Evreux and Cunetio hoards, as well as those catalogued in CHRB II-V, there were only 4 examples of this type. Interestingly enough, it is said that the Duke of Sussex has an example of this coin in his collection.
