LYDIA. Tripolis. Time of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, 161-169. Diassarion (Bronze, 24 mm, 8.66 g, 6 h). ΤΡΙΠΟΛΕΙ-ΤΩΝ Draped bust of Artemis to left, carrying quiver over her back shoulder; bow at her left. Rev. ΤΡΙΠOΛΕΙΤΩΝ Nude Apollo standing facing, head turned to left, holding laurel-branch and bow. BMC 9. RPC online 1642. SNG Copenhagen 717. Struck from finely engraved dies; scarce. Some deposits, otherwise, very fine.
Could this bust of Artemis be actually a disguised portrait of Faustina II? The bust left and the hairstyle both have affinities with busts of the empress.
