Description

A Very Important Series of Coins of Syracuse mostly from a Distinguished European Collector
Tetradrachm circa 450-440 BC, AR 13.37 g. Slow quadriga driven r. by charioteer, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying r. to crown the horses. In exergue, ketos r. Rev. ΣVRAKOΣI – ON Head of the nymph Arethusa r., hair bound with double fillet, wearing earring and necklace with pendant; around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. Rizzo pl. XXXVI, 16 (these dies).
