Charles I, York mint, shilling, Group 1, m.m. lion 2, obv., crowned bust left, XII behind, rev., legend CHRIST / O.AVSPI / CE.REG / NO., square-topped shield, EBOR above, on long cross fourchée with twigs or ‘sprigs’ in cross-ends, 5.59g (Besly 1B; BNJ 28, p.204, pl. XV, 11 (this coin); Brooker 1090; N. 2316; S. 2870), tiny metal flaw on reverse, extremely fine and deeply toned Provenance: Dr E.C. Carter (collection purchased by A.H. Baldwin & Sons, 1950); R. Carlyon-Britton (portions of collection purchased by B.A. Seaby, 1940-61).
