King’s South Africa, 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (5162 Pte. J. P. Barry. Leins. R.), nearly extremely fine. Private J. P. Barry was convicted under section 18 of the Army Act 1881 (which covers malingering, feigning illness, theft or ‘indecent or unnatural behaviour’), and was initially disqualified from being awarded his Q.S.A. (3 clasps) and his K.SA. He later had both medals restored on 16.04.1918, as marked in the roll, suggesting either a misunderstanding, or having had charges dropped in light of Great War service, perhaps. A potentially interesting story, and worthy of further research. The roll mentions that he was from Birmingham.
