Description

Justinian I, 527-565. Half Follis (Bronze, 16 mm, 2.78 g, 6 h), Salona, 552-553. D N IVSTINIANVS P P Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Justinian I to right. Rev. Large K. DOC 360. MIB 250. SB 331. Some deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Geiger, privately acquired from the famous architect and numismatist, Dr. Franz Füeg (1921-2019), on 31 January 1995 (with collector's ticket).

The mint in Salona was opened for a short period of time only toward the end of the Gothic War, when Byzantines troops under the command of Narses gathered in Illyria to invade Italy.
