TOKENS AND WEIGHTS, 4th-6th centuries. Host coin a follis of Constantine I, 307/310-337. Weight of 1 Semissis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.13 g, 12 h), uncertain mint, circa 325-329. [...] Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. [PROVIDEN ]TIAE AVGG / [...] Camp gate with two turrets and no doors; above, star. Hoover 2004. Edge serrated. Earthen deposits, otherwise, good fine.
From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.
The purpose of such serrated pieces is debated, however, their use as weights for solidi and semisses among the numerous evidently weight-standardized pieces of around 4 and 2 grams, respectively, is very likely.
