TOKENS AND WEIGHTS, 4th-6th centuries. Host coin a follis of Constantine I, 307/310-337. Weight of 1 Semissis (Bronze, 15 mm, 2.10 g, 6 h), Treveri, 319. IMP CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG Laureate, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right. Rev. VICTORIAE LAE[TAE PRINC PERP] / [...] Two victories holding shield inscribed VOT / P R over altar. For coin type, RIC 213. Edge serrated. Slightly smoothed and with minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, about very fine.
From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.
The purpose of such serrated pieces is debated, however, their use as weights for solidi and semisses among the numerous evidently weight-standardized pieces of around 4 and 2 grams, respectively, is very likely.
